Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project

The Punatsangchhu I Hydroelectric Project, located in the Southern Himalayas, will generate 1,200 MW of power with six turbines. The 130 m high concrete dam, stretching across the Punatsangchhu River, is monitored using advanced instrumentation provided by Encardio Rite. This includes digital inclinometers, piezometers, multi-strand anchor load cells, and borehole extensometers. Encardio Rite handled the complete supply, installation, commissioning, and monitoring of instruments, ensuring slope stability and the safety of the dam and powerhouse complex during construction.

Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project

The Punatsangchhu-I hydroelectric project is located in the Southern Himalayas, about 80 km east of Bhutan’s capital Thimphu. The project’s concrete dam is 130 m in height by 239 m in length and stretches across the Punatsangchhu River. The facility includes an underground powerhouse that will generate power via six 200 MW turbines when complete in 2019.

The construction of the dam will start after the slope stabilization work is complete. Encardio-rite was appointed to do the instrumentation work i.e. setting up a digital inclinometer system, piezometers & multi-strand anchor load cells for slope stability monitoring.

Encardio-rite was awarded the contract for the supply, installation, commissioning, and monitoring of instruments for the powerhouse complex. Instruments used included piezometers, borehole extensometers, load cells, measuring anchors, bi-reflex targets, and portable read-out units.
